Strip & compact subgrade
Remove organics; proof-roll the subgrade until it tightens up.

Lay in lifts
Place in 4" lifts; compact each lift to 95%+ modified Proctor.

Moisture-condition
A light mist before compacting helps fines bind without flooding.

Check elevations
Final base should be smooth, dense, and within 1/4" of grade.

Filled the low spot
We had a low spot by the barn that held water every time it rained. Three tons of road base graded into it, compacted with the tractor tires, and it has stayed dry and firm through two storms now. Gray color blends in with the rest of the lot. Easy ordering, and the pile landed right where I marked it with a flag.

Good base, dusty day
Solid material for what it is. Used 6 tons under a shed pad and a parking spot beside the garage. It compacts tight and levels nicely, but there was more fine dust in this load than I expected, and on a dry windy afternoon it coated everything nearby. Wetting it down before compacting fixed that. Delivery came late in the afternoon but the driver called first.

Paver patio base
Used this dense-graded road base as the compacted layer under a 300 square foot paver patio. Five tons gave me a little over four inches after compaction. Mix of crushed stone and fines packs down really firm and screeds level with no trouble. Driver backed the truck up the narrow side drive and dropped it on the tarp. Pavers have not moved.

Driveway finally holds
Ordered 12 tons of road base for our gravel driveway that turned to soup every spring. Spread it four inches thick, watered it and ran the plate compactor over it twice. It locked up hard and the ruts are gone. The driver spotted the load in a long strip down the drive which saved a lot of raking. Really pleased.
