Strip topsoil to 6-10", with the depth set by traffic and the frost line in your area.

Optional but worth it; a woven separator stops the base from migrating into native soil.

Spread the stone in 2-3 inch lifts and compact each lift with a plate compactor before adding the next.

Crown the surface
Crown the top ~1/4" per foot toward the edges so water sheds.

Base for the slab
Ordered 8 tons as the base under a 20 by 24 garage slab. Consistent crushed stone, no dirt in it, and it leveled out well with a plate compactor. This is the stuff most concrete guys want under a pour and it did the job. Delivery was on the day I picked and the pile was right where I flagged.

Solid product, late arrival
I do small hardscape jobs and ordered 6 tons of 57 stone for a French drain and a base under a shed. Stone was clean and uniform, right around 3/4 inch, drains like it should. Only knock is the truck arrived near the end of the delivery window, so my crew stood around for a bit. Would still order again.

Driveway looks brand new
Put 12 tons of #57 on our 200 foot gravel driveway after years of neglect. Spread it with the tractor box blade and it locked in after a week of driving on it. Water now runs off instead of pooling in the low spot by the garage. The driver dropped it in three piles down the drive like I asked, which saved me hours.

Great around the foundation
Had a wet crawl space problem and put 5 tons of #57 in a trench along the foundation with a perforated pipe. It stays put, does not wash, and the crawl space has been dry since. Driver called ahead and got the truck through a pretty tight gate. Easy.
