How to install River Rock

  1. 1
    Edge the area

Steel, plastic, or stone edging keeps loose decorative gravel from migrating.

  2. 2
    Clear & level

Remove sod, grade flat, and lay landscape fabric to suppress weeds.

  3. 3
    Spread to depth

2-3" finished depth is standard, going deeper for dog runs or high-traffic paths.

  4. 4
    Top up annually

Pea gravel and river rock settle ~10-15% per year; plan one re-dressing each spring.

    Dog run and side yard

Two tons went into the dog run on the side of the house where grass never survived. The rock is smooth enough that the dogs do not mind walking on it, and it rinses off clean with the hose. No dust or smell at all. Driver called about half an hour out and put the pile exactly where the cones were.

    Nice rock, big minimum

Nice looking stone in the one to three inch range, smooth and rounded like it should be. I only needed about a half ton for a dry creek feature but the minimum was a full ton, so I have a small pile left behind the shed. Not the end of the world. It drains well where I laid it and does not shift much underfoot. Delivery was right on schedule.

    Dry creek bed

Built a dry creek to move runoff away from the patio and used 4 tons of this river rock. Water flows through it nicely and it stays clean after rain instead of getting muddy. Spread easy with a rake since the pieces are rounded. The truck handled our tight cul-de-sac turn without a problem and dropped it right at the curb like I asked.

    Beautiful in the beds

Got 3 tons of river rock for the beds along the front of the house and around the downspouts. The mix of colors is really pretty, tans and grays with some reddish pieces, and it looks great with the black landscape fabric underneath. Driver called ahead and set the pile on the tarp so cleanup was nothing. Very happy with how it turned out.
