How to install Fill Dirt

  1. 1
    Test & prep

Compact subsoil if filling; uncompacted fill settles unevenly.

  2. 2
    Spread in lifts

4-6" lifts, lightly tamped between, prevents future settlement.

  3. 3
    Finish grade

Crown away from structures; rake smooth before seeding or planting.

  4. 4
    Water in

A light watering helps the soil bond and consolidates the first inch.

    Contractor here, does the job

I run a small excavation outfit and buy fill dirt regularly for pool backfill and building pads. Took 30 tons for a garage slab prep. Clean screened material, consistent from load to load, compacted to grade in three lifts with no soft pockets. Dispatch confirmed the drop location the day before and the driver hit the mark. Will keep ordering.

    Good dirt, late truck

Solid fill dirt for the money. Used 10 tons to backfill behind a new retaining wall and bring the grade up before topsoil. Screened well, a few clay clumps but they broke up fine. Only knock is the delivery window. I was told morning and the truck showed up after four, so I lost the day. Product itself did exactly what I needed.

  3. Dana K.

    Filled the low spot

We had a low spot along the back fence that turned into a pond every time it rained. Ordered 6 tons of fill dirt, and the driver dumped it right where I had staked out the tarp. It was screened, so no big rocks or roots, and it spread with a rake and a lawn tractor in an afternoon. Compacted nicely after a soak and a run with the plate compactor. Grass seed is going down this weekend.
