How to install Drain Rock

Slope the trench
Minimum 1% slope (1" per 8 ft) so water actually flows.

Wrap with fabric
A nonwoven filter fabric keeps fines out of the void space.

Surround the pipe
4" of stone below, 4-6" above the perforated pipe.

Backfill carefully
Top with native soil or sod; do not leave the stone exposed long-term unless intended.

Under the deck
Put 4 tons of drain rock under a new deck and along the crawlspace vents. Water no longer sits under there and the weeds gave up. Big enough stone that it does not scatter when the dog tears across it. The delivery guy handled the tight turn at the top of our drive better than I could have.

Retaining wall backfill
Backfilled a 40 foot block retaining wall with 5 tons of drain rock behind the filter fabric. Uniform size, gray, rinsed pretty clean. Went in fast with the skid steer and the wall has drained perfectly through the wet season. Delivery was straightforward, driver called from the road and put it right where I asked.

More than we needed
Ordered drain rock for a dry well under a downspout and a drip line along the garage. The rock is nice and clean and does its job. I only needed about a ton and a half but you order in whole tons, so I have a leftover pile of it in the side yard. Fine, I will find a use for it. Truck showed up within the window.
