How to install Decomposed Granite

  1. 1
    Edge the area

Steel, plastic, or stone edging keeps loose decorative gravel from migrating.

  2. 2
    Clear & level

Remove sod, grade flat, and lay landscape fabric to suppress weeds.

  3. 3
    Spread to depth

2-3" finished depth is standard, going deeper for dog runs or high-traffic paths.

  4. 4
    Top up annually

Pea gravel and river rock settle ~10-15% per year; plan one re-dressing each spring.

    Bocce court and fire pit

Landscaper here. Used 8 tons of decomposed granite for a client's bocce court and the seating area around a fire pit. Screened well, consistent quarter inch and down, no big chunks to pick out. Compacted to a hard even surface with a roller and a hose. Dump truck squeezed through a narrow side gate without a scratch.

    Great product, late drop

The DG itself is exactly what I wanted for a low water front yard, about 5 tons spread 3 inches deep around the agaves and boulders. Packs firm, looks clean, drains fine in a storm. My only knock is the truck arrived at the very end of the delivery window, so I lost most of the day waiting on it. Would still order it again.

    Beautiful garden path

I put in a winding path through the back garden with 3 tons of decomposed granite and it turned out lovely. The tan gold color is warm against all the green and it firms up nicely after you wet it and tamp it. The fines are what make it pack, so expect a little dust while you spread. Driver called ahead and tipped the load exactly where I had chalked the spot.
