About 1.5″ Crushed Gravel

1 1/2″ Crushed Gravel is a coarse, gray gravel with pieces about an inch and a half across. The large size makes the material stable in thick layers and quick to drain.

Good for

  • Sub-base under driveways and parking pads
  • Stabilizing wet or muddy spots
  • Wide drainage trenches
  • Culvert ends and ditch lines

Use as a base

Because the pieces are big, finish with a layer of smaller stone on top when you want a smoother walking or driving surface. Lay it in lifts of about four inches and compact each one before the next.

Large pieces resist sinking into soft ground, so this gravel is often used under finer surface stone. It is rough to walk on, so think of it as a working material rather than a decorative one. Plan to spread it with a loader for large areas. On smaller jobs, a wheelbarrow and a sturdy shovel can handle it, though the work is heavy and goes slowly.

This gravel is sold by the ton. A minimum of 2 tons applies, and the delivered price is displayed after you enter your ZIP code.

    Good base, long day

Solid stone for a base layer. I put down 6 tons under a new gravel parking pad and it packed in nicely with the plate compactor before I topped it with smaller stuff. Only gripe is the delivery window. I was told morning and the truck showed up around four, so I lost most of a Saturday waiting. Material itself was clean, very little dirt mixed in.

    Drainage behind the house

Grading a low spot behind the house that flooded every storm. Dug it out, laid fabric, and spread 3 tons of this crushed gravel as the drainage layer. Rakes out fine if you have a strong back, it is heavy stuff. Two storms since and the area is dry. Dropped exactly on the tarp I laid out at the end of the driveway.

    Fixed our muddy lane

We ordered 12 tons of the 1 1/2 inch crushed gravel to rebuild the lane back to our barn after a wet spring turned it to soup. The bigger stone bit right into the soft spots and stopped moving once the tractor rolled over it a few times. Driver called about twenty minutes out and backed the dump truck right up to the stakes I had set. Water runs off now instead of pooling.
